How To: Add a Description for a Stock Item in a Website

Table Of Contents

Introduction

Website Categories setup and maintenance is an Advanced User feature.
This feature allows you to create website-specific product descriptions that override the standard descriptions held against a stock item. This is useful when the same product appears on multiple websites but requires different marketing content or descriptions on each site.
Important: Please speak to your website developers before using this feature.
Prerequisite: Configuring and maintaining Web Categories requires HQ User permissions.

How Website-Specific Descriptions Work

By default, a stock item's standard short and long descriptions can be displayed on your website.
However, you can create website-specific descriptions that apply only to a particular website and override the descriptions held against the stock record.
If a description is entered in the Website Category/Stock Description fields, this will take precedence over the descriptions stored against the stock item.
This allows the same stock item to have different descriptions across different websites or web stores.

Add a Website-Specific Description

  1. Open the Web Configuration screen.
For help opening the screen, see How To: Open the Website Categories Screen.
  2. Load the required website.
  3. Press Alt+E or click Edit to enter edit mode.
  4. Locate and select the stock item within the category that you want to update.
  5. Enter a description in the Website/Stock Short Description field (optional).
This description will be used instead of the stock item's standard short description on the selected website.
  6. Enter a description in the Website/Stock Long Description field (optional).
This description will be used instead of the stock item's standard long description on the selected website.
  7. Press Ctrl+S or click Save when you have finished making changes.

When to Use Website-Specific Descriptions

Website-specific descriptions are particularly useful when:
  • The same product is sold across multiple websites.
  • Different websites target different audiences.
  • Alternative marketing messages are required.
  • Product descriptions need to be tailored for a specific brand or market.
  • Website content differs from internal stock descriptions.

Additional Information

Website-specific descriptions only affect the website where they are configured. They do not change the underlying stock record descriptions within Khaos Control.
Using website-specific descriptions allows greater flexibility when managing multi-site or multi-brand environments while maintaining a single stock record within the system.
For best results, ensure website-specific descriptions are reviewed regularly and remain aligned with your website content strategy and branding guidelines.
