How To: Add a Description for a Stock Item in a Category
Table Of Contents
Introduction
Website Categories setup and maintenance is an Advanced User feature.
Category-specific descriptions allow you to display different product information depending on the category in which the stock item appears. These descriptions override all other descriptions, including:
- The standard descriptions held against the stock item.
- Any descriptions configured specifically for the website.
This can be useful when the same product appears in multiple categories and requires different marketing or descriptive content.
Important: Please speak to your website developers before using this feature.
Prerequisite: Configuring and maintaining Web Categories requires HQ User or Admin User permission.
Add Category-Specific Descriptions
- Open the Web Configuration screen. For help opening the screen, see How To: Open the Website Categories Screen.
- Load the required website.
- Press Alt+E or click Edit to enter edit mode.
- Select the stock item within the category that you want to update.
- Enter a description in the Category/Stock Short Description field (optional). This description will be used instead of the standard stock description and any website-specific stock description for this category.
- Enter a description in the Category/Stock Long Description field (optional). This description will override all other long descriptions for this stock item within the selected category.
- Press Ctrl+S or click Save when you have finished.
Description Hierarchy
When displaying product descriptions, Khaos Control uses the following priority:
| Priority | Description Source |
|---|---|
| Highest | Category/Stock Description |
| Middle | Website/Stock Description |
| Lowest | Standard Stock Description |
This means that if a Category/Stock Description exists, it will always be displayed in preference to the website-level or stock-level description.
Additional Information
Category-specific descriptions allow greater flexibility when managing products across multiple website categories.
Typical uses include:
- Highlighting different product features in different categories.
- Creating category-focused marketing content.
- Tailoring descriptions for different customer audiences.
- Improving category relevance and website navigation.
Because these descriptions override all other stock descriptions for the category, they should be reviewed regularly to ensure they remain accurate and consistent with your website content strategy.
