How To: Create a Packaging Stock Item

This process should be followed when creating packaging stock items (e.g. pallets, boxes and other containers) for use in Sales Invoice manager's Packing stage.

  1. Open a Stock screen (show me how).
  2. Press Ctrl+N or click the New item icon is the button bar's NEW button .
  3. Create a new packaging stock item with the appropriate fields filled, including:
    • Stock Detail Properties Tab:
      • Stock Code: stock items reference code.
      • Description: the description of the stock item.
      • Stock Type: set as "Packaging" (this may appear as "[ Packaging | Packaging ]" in the drop-down list of Stock Types, as this will make it easier to see all the packaging items when using Sales Invoice manager's Packing stage to select the correct packaging.
      • Buy Price: the amount the item costs to purchase.
      • Sell Price: the amount the item is sold for (if you are making a charge, such as a refundable deposit on a beer barrel, for this particular packaging item).
      • Stock Value: the stock value is used when calculating the cost of sale (COS).
      • Avg Weight (Optional): the average weight of the packaging. If you select the courier service on the basis of calculated weight, you will need to enter data into this field.
Note: Whilst Khaos Control works with any numerical weight system that uses factors of 10, or any ratio of it (e.g. any metric system, such as grammes or kilogrammes), certain courier integrations may stipulate the unit to be used.
Once a unit of weight is chosen, it must be used consistently throughout the system (e.g. in Stock, Customer weight-related discounts, Courier Banding and Delivery Rates). Do not enter some weights in grammes and others in kilogrammes, otherwise errors will occur.
      • Safe Level (Optional): used to record the point at which you wish to see the item appear on the stock reordering screen.
      • Min Level (Optional): used to record the point at which you wish to see the item appear in the bottom "red warning" grid on the stock reordering screen.
      • Reorder Qty (Optional): used to record the quantity you normally wish to reorder at one time (some people refer to this as the economic reordering quantity).
      • Min Reorder Qty (Optional): used to record the minimum quantity you might reorder (e.g. the smallest quantity your supplier will sell to you).
      • Reorder Multiple (Optional): used to record the quantity of items you might wish to reorder on a regular basis (e.g. milk in crates of 12 bottles).
    • Stock Detail Options Tab:
      • Stock Controlled: keep as Stock Controlled (if appropriate).
      • Packaging Item: ticked.
    • Stock Detail Accounting Tab:
      • Tax Rate: sets the tax rate for the item. Enables Khaos Control to calculate the appropriate VAT for sales and purchases of the item.
    • Stock Detail Suppliers Tab (Optional): Use this to link to your preferred supplier and any other suppliers from whom you purchase the packaging.
  4. Once the required properties have been entered, Press Ctrl+S or click the disk icon is the button bar's SAVE button to save the packaging item.

Note: Where a business wishes to exclude the cost of packaging items from its cost of sale calculations, it should record packaging costs against a separate purchase nominal code, please also refer to: How To: Setup and Use the Stock PNominal for Non-Sale Items.
